Donkins neues Album „Value“ markiert eine Zäsur. Die Musik ist gleichermaßen Rückschau, Ausblick und die Justierung der eigenen Mitte. Ohne dass er das geplant hätte, wurde daraus ein sehr autobiografisches Werk, in dem verschiedene Aspekte seines bisherigen Wegs ihren Niederschlag finden.

Dabei ist es nicht überraschend, wenn ein Bassist in einem Atemzug Dave Holland und Charles Mingus als Vorbilder benennt, denn beide waren wegweisende Jazz-Bassisten. Und doch gibt es kaum zwei Musiker, deren Persönlichkeiten gegensätzlicher wären. Dave Holland steht für Struktur und Kontrolle, Charles Mingus hingegen für Impuls und Chaos. Donkin vereint beides in sich.

Jeder Song auf „Value“ macht den Eindruck, als würde sich Donkin etwas von der Seele reden wollen. Die CD hat eine große narrative Kraft. Doch wie jede gute Erzählung, so lebt auch diese aus sich selbst heraus. Der Bassist hat dafür kein spezielles Konzept entwickelt, sondern vertraut auf seinen Instinkt und Geschmack. Es gibt kein Harmonieinstrument, sondern Donkin setzt voll auf die Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten zwischen drei Melodieinstrumenten. „Value“ ist zugleich ein sehr persönliches, autobiografisch geprägtes und wahrscheinlich gerade deshalb ein offenes, global ausgerichtetes Album, das kongenial den Moment und die Ewigkeit vereint. Es ist ein kollektives Solowerk, das weitgehend ohne Soli im konventionellen Sinne auskommt und trotzdem viel Raum für individuelle Spots gibt. Vor allem aber ist es ein sehr ganzheitliches Werk, das sich nicht zuletzt über seine ehrlich ausgetragenen Paradoxa und Widersprüche definiert, die eben die große Lebensnähe dieser Musik ausmachen.
